R.D. Olson Completes Luxury Condos in the City of Angels
November 14, 2011
IRVINE, Calif. – R.D. Olson Construction has completed a luxury condominium complex in Los Angeles, which fuses California history with contemporary design.
The building, located at 940 E. 2nd St. for which it is named, was originally constructed in the early 1900s as a sugar warehouse. Railroad tracks once ran on each side of the building so trains could unload boxcars of sugar directly into the heart of the warehouse. In maintaining the building’s authenticity, the design, which represents the work of Rockefeller Partners Architects of El Segundo, Calif., employed these brick walls to serve as artsy focal points on each level.
940 E. 2nd St. consists of 38 units. Of these, 30 are three levels measuring between 1,285 to 2,603 square feet. Eight are four levels with their square footage ranging from 2,146 to 2,463.
Because the 940 E. 2nd St. complex is centrally located in Los Angeles’ art district, the ground-floor entrance to all units are designed as workstations with sealed concrete flooring and the building’s original brick wall serving as a backdrop. Dark stained oak wood stairs lead to the second level, where the units break from the past to the present with a highly contemporary design.
The second floor houses the kitchen, dining room, and bath. Its dark-stained wood cabinets, Caesar Stone gray countertops, and dark wood flooring generate modern-style richness. Recessed, pendent fixtures and track lighting enhance the contrast between the white walls and dark finishes.
The master bedroom and bath comprise the third level in each unit. The flooring on the tri-level units is carpet, whereas the four-level units are wood.
The four-level units offer an additional mezzanine area, which easily may be converted into an office or sitting area. The 2nd and 3rd floors of all units have vaulted ceilings, ground floor patios and 3rd floor private decks. The construction project cost is $3.6 million.
Another feature that make the 940 E. 2nd St. condominium complex particularly appealing is its location, with Little Tokyo being approximately .5 miles away. The site also is known as a hotspot for filming commercials and photo shoots.
